Horizon 'Living with ADHD' BBC2 Thursday 3rd February 2005

Just a reminder to let everyone know about this programme being shown tonight

The 2 producers, one of the mums and one of the professionals who have been involved in this program are appearing on Radio 5 Live today 2nd February 2005 between 2 and 2.30 p.m. Well worth listening in to and you can also listen online so even those outside the UK get a chance to hear some more about what is going on.

This was fantastic and Lotty gave great mentions to us here on adders.org so thanks for the fantastic support Lotty and I am so pleased that you have joined us here and found lots of help and support. You did fantastic as did Angel Adams and Alicki one of the producers - all to help raise the awareness for ADHD including the positive sides too.

If anyone didn't get to listen in then you can still here it by clicking the link above and they give the oportunity to listen to previous shows so it is still well worth trying to catch this item.

There are a couple of write ups in some of the TV listing magazines which I have copied below as I think these will help to encourage folk to watch

"Horizon: 'Living with ADHD'

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is one of the most feared and misunderstood of all medical conditions. Despite over 200 scientific papers published on it every year, it remains stigmatized and controversial. Some doctors don't even believe it exists. Yet it is estimated that as many as 3-5% of the childhood population, and over one million adults in the UK are affected.

For this edition of Horizon the programme makers spent 6 months with two families to find out what this neurological condition is really like. The result is a touching and revealing portrait which explores how ADHD is diagnosed and treated, and the medical reasons why it exists.

Producers: Milla Harrison-Hansley and Alicky Sussman"

"Living with ADHD

Documentary about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), a misunderstood disability that many still think of as 'just being naughty' when suffered by children. The programme follows two families, the Hills and the Fischers, over six months as they go through diagnosis and therapy."

"Examining the often misdiagnosed disability attention deficit hyperactivity disorder"

"science documentary series - Tonight an investigation into two families whose children are diagnosed with ADHD - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - highlighting the impact that the condition has had on their lives"

Horizon - Thu 3 Feb, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins

Living with ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most misunderstood of all conditions.

Some people accuse children with ADHD of just being naughty. They blame the parents and namby-pamby liberals who just won't accept that some people are just badly brought up and disruptive.

For this edition of Horizon, the programme-makers spent six months with two families learning to live with ADHD. The result is a moving and intimate observational film that reveals:

1. What it is really like to have the condition.
2. The medical reasons why it exists.
3. How it is diagnosed.
4. How to tell it apart from normal behaviour.
5. How it often exists with other problems such as dyslexia or dyspraxia.
6. How to deal with it and the range of treatments that are available from drugs to parenting advice.
7. Its lows, but also its highs. Many people with ADHD believe that it gives them real advantages.

To get to the truth, Horizon follows two families, the Hills and the Fischers, as they go through diagnosis and therapy.

The Times today 3/2/05

"HORIZON BBC Two, 9pm
Horizon usually explains science by the telling of stories. Although its purpose here - to make science accessible and spread essential knowledge - remains the same, the approach is radically different. Instead of constructing a narrative, the film-makers spent six months following two families whose members suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Not only is the condition much misunderstood, but some people deny that it even exists. Television has played a crucial role in increasing public awareness of Tourette's syndrome; here, it is doing the same for ADHD. The programme is informative, sympathetic and often extremely funny. Nothing but good can come of it."

In a couple of other listing magazines I have also noticed that they mention that this affects adults too so watch out it may even help on that side of things too!!!!

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage as many people as possible to spread the word about this program to as many others as they can and especially their schools and other professionals in their area so that as many people as possible have the chance to see what I believe and hope will be one of the most amazing portrayals of the condition and what it is to live this 24/7. I really hope that this program will enable us to show others just what it is to life this life with our children 24/7 and also to show how fantastic our children are even though they often come across differently to others. I hope that this program will be a great starting point to dispel all the negative attitudes that are around to our children and the condition of ADHD as a whole. I am sure that it will but this is my hope for the right results!! Caroline
